NFL draft: Eagles trade with Cowboys to take WR DeVonta Smith at No. 10

The Cowboys and Eagles may not hate each other as much as people thought.

The two NFC East rivals struck a rare deal on Thursday night at the NFL draft, one that sent Alabama wide receiver and reigning Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith to Philadelphia with the No. 10 overall pick.

The Eagles traded up to take Dallas’ No. 10 overall pick, and gave the Cowboys their first and third round picks in this year’s draft. The Eagles secured the No. 12 overall pick after trading back with the Miami Dolphins earlier this year.

Smith, who became just the fourth wide receiver ever to win the Heisman Trophy last season, racked up 1,856 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns with Alabama last season while leading them to a dominant College Football Playoff title win over Ohio State.

Smith will now get to reunite with his former college quarterback Jalen Hurts, who will officially replace Carson Wentz as the team’s starting quarterback this season. He took over briefly last season, and then Wentz was traded to the Indianapolis Colts.

“I know for sure that we're going to work every day,” Smith said on ESPN. “Every day we’re going to come in, give it our best and we’re ready.”

Cowboys take Penn State LB Micah Parsons

Though they had to trade down to do it, the Cowboys made a move to boost their defense.

Dallas took Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons with their newly-acquired No. 12 pick.

Parsons recorded 109 total tackles as a sophomore in 2019 for the Nittany Lions. He then opted-out of last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The last game he played actually took place in AT&T Stadium for Penn State's Cotton Bowl game against Memphis, and he hinted at his hope of playing in Dallas after that game.

“This moment is so big, y’all don’t even understand,” he said on ESPN. “My parents were Cowboys fans, and all last year I said I was going to Dallas. If God’s not real, I don’t know what is. This is so unreal, it’s crazy.”
