Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz, who is at the start of his very first training camp with the team, needs surgery on his foot to correct an injury. According to head coach Frank Reich, he'll be out 5-12 weeks.

Wentz first experienced discomfort in his foot during Thursday's practice. He sat out on Friday and Saturday, and following exams and conversations with doctors both inside and outside the organization, they reached the "very clear" conclusion that surgery was needed.

Reich told reporters on Monday that Wentz's foot injury may have originally occurred in high school, and the pain he was feeling came from a bone that had broken loose.

The original timeframe the team gave for Wentz was "out indefinitely," so a recovery time of 5-12 weeks is definitely an improvement. But that's a pretty large range of time. If he heals and rehabs quickly, he could be ready to start against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1.

If Wentz needs the full 12 weeks to heal and rehab, he wouldn't be back until Week 7 in late October. Or, of course, he might be back at any point before that. The Colts have given themselves and Wentz a wide berth to allow him to get his foot right at his own pace.

Wentz, 28, is in his first season with the Colts. He spent the first five seasons of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, helping lead them to their first Super Bowl victory before suffering a season-ending injury. The bloom came off the rose somewhat after that, as injuries piled up and there were reportedly internal struggles about the franchise's direction.

The Eagles traded Wentz in March for a third-round pick and a conditional second-round pick. Wentz's foot injury actually has an impact on that trade return for the Eagles. If Wentz misses the full 12 weeks, there's no chance that conditional second-round pick turns into a first round pick.
