Yahoo Sports NFL bad beat: BetMGM took a $100,000 bet on under 53.5 points for Chiefs-Texans. It ended at 54 points
The bettor who took under 53.5 for the NFL’s opening game had to feel pretty good for most of Thursday night.
And the last couple minutes had to be excruciating.
BetMGM had a $100,000 bet on the under for the Kansas City Chiefs-Houston Texans game on Thursday night. That bet would have won $90,909.10. There were 31 points through three quarters.

Chiefs, Texans combine for 23 fourth-quarter points
A Tyreek Hill touchdown early in the fourth quarter wasn’t the best news for under bettors, but there were still just 38 points scored at that point. In a blowout, the Chiefs were likely to bleed the clock as best they could.
The Texans scored with 7:15 left. There was a fourth-and-8 conversion on that drive that would have probably iced the under bet. That Texans touchdown made it a 31-13 Chiefs lead. That score held until the final three minutes.
Then it turned south. The Texans scored and instead of going for the 2-point conversion, which Bill O’Brien should have done down 12 points, they settled for the extra point. That point would be pretty big a little later on.
The Chiefs got the onside kick and instead of falling on it or being tackled right there, they got a rare long return. Kansas City started in field-goal range. Even though Clyde Edwards-Helaire got stopped (and stopped, and stopped) at the goal line, the Chiefs kicked an easy field goal.
Chiefs 34, Texans 20. 54 points. A half-point loss and a $190,909.10 swing.
The total moved throughout the week at BetMGM. It was 54.5 early in the week, then 54, and then 53.5. Those line moves turned out to be enormous when a late flurry of points ended up crushing those on the wrong side of the total for the first game of the season.
