NFC North over/unders: Can Mitch Trubisky win the starting job this month?

It’s August, which means it’s time to break down Las Vegas over/under win totals. While my teammates Brad Evans and Tank Williams handled the standard over/under lines you’ll find in Nevada sports books, here are some entirely made up over/unders for each team in the NFC South (we’ll be doing every division this week) as the preseason gets into full swing:

Starts Mitch Trubisky makes in the first three games of the preseason: 0.5

Before the preseason opener, everyone believes Mike Glennon will be the Bears starter for at least the start of the regular season. But as we’ve seen many times before, that can change. No. 2 overall picks don’t often sit long. If Glennon struggles at all we’ll hear calls for Trubisky, whether that’s in Week 5 against the Minnesota Vikings or the first quarter of the first preseason game. I like Glennon well enough and think he holds the job fairly deep into the season. I can’t rule out Trubisky making a huge impression and the Bears giving him what amounts to a starting audition by the third preseason game, but I’m not betting on it happening. THE PICK: UNDER

Rushing yards for Ty Montgomery this preseason: 130.5

It still seems weird for the Packers to have a guy wearing No. 88 as their starting tailback. But the Packers seem committed to Montgomery as the lead back, at least for now. Rookie Jamaal Williams seems to be Montgomery’s chief competition, but he’s still a rookie. It’s not out of the question for Williams (or another rookie, Aaron Jones) to perform so well in the preseason that he carves out a huge role and cuts into Montgomery’s snaps, but Montgomery could make that a moot point by playing well himself. THE PICK: OVER

Rushing yards for Dalvin Cook this preseason: 173.5

Cook seems to have a golden opportunity. He impressed in camp while Latavius Murray was out with an ankle issue. Now he has a chance to sew up the starting job and a majority of the snaps with an impressive preseason. He’ll probably play more than veteran starting tailbacks (hence, the higher line than Ty Montgomery’s over/under) as the Vikings get him used to game action and see what they can trust him with. Jordan Howard had 173 yards for the Bears last preseason, and I think Cook can surpass that. THE PICK: OVER

Tackles for rookie linebacker Jarrad Davis this preseason: 13.5

Davis could be a big difference maker for the Lions defense. He’s a rookie but the first-round pick should play all three downs for Detroit. The Lions haven’t had great inside linebacker play since DeAndre Levy’s body started breaking down. Having a versatile two-way linebacker should be an upgrade for the entire defense, even if Davis is a rookie. THE PICK: OVER

AFC South: How effective will J.J. Watt be after back surgery?
NFC South: Will Cam Newton play this preseason?
AFC East: Can Tom Brady be even better this season?
