Neymar, Mbappe, Cavani combine for eight goals in case you were wondering how Paris Saint-Germain was doing

Let’s check in on Paris Saint-Germain, shall we?

The cash-flush French giants have turned Ligue 1 into the ultimate foregone conclusion in Europe’s big five leagues, and at the moment they hold a 13-point lead in the table with two games in hand. They’ve also spent all but one matchweek in first place, and still haven’t lost domestically this season.

Perhaps Saturday’s home fixture against last-place Guingamp provided the perfect underscore. PSG won 9-0 thanks to hat tricks from Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani, as well as a brace from Neymar.

Puzzlingly enough, it took the Brazilian superstar and his side nearly 11 minutes to open the scoring, but open they did:

The second goal was a beautiful bit of combo play between Neymar and Mbappe, turning the Guingamp defenders into practice cones:

Cavani’s work rate helped indirectly lead to the third goal, again scored by Mbappe:

Cavani scored in the 59th minute and had his hat trick by the 75th and Thomas Meunier polished off the rout with a goal in the 83rd minute and blah blah blah blah blah.

We all know PSG will win the league for the sixth time in the past seven years. The real entertainment will come with a two-leg Round of 16 tie against suddenly white-hot Manchester United on Feb. 12 and March 6.

It wasn’t all good for PSG, as influential midfielder Marco Verratti had to come off inside 20 minutes with an unspecified injury, of which manager Thomas Tuchel spoke grimly.

We certainly wish him the best and hope he’s OK. As for PSG in Ligue 1, they’ll be just fine.
