Yankees OF Giancarlo Stanton likely won't return until August, Brian Cashman says

Giancarlo Stanton is back on the injured list.

The New York Yankees outfielder has a PCL sprain in his right knee, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday. Stanton left the Yankees’ 4-3 win against the Toronto Blue Jays early on Tuesday night after an awkward slide into third base.

The team placed Stanton on the 10-day IL after Wednesday’s game and recalled Mike Tauchman to the 25-man roster for the two-game series against the Boston Red Sox in London. Stanton did not make the trip.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Thursday that Stanton likely won’t return to action until August.

Stanton, who went 1-for-1 in their win on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium, attempted to slide head-first into third base in the first inning after a groundout by Luke Voit. Stanton got tangled up with Toronto pitcher Clayton Richard, who tagged him out and appeared to accidentally step on his hand in the process.

Stanton remained in the game through the third inning before he was pulled.

The 29-year-old has played just nine games for the Yankees this season due to numerous injuries, including a left bicep strain, a shoulder strain and a left calf strain.

He has recorded just eight hits and one home run in that time.
