Mets P Marcus Stroman upset game started with heavy rain, was delayed almost instantly

Despite a steady rain throughout New York City, the Mets opted to start their game with the Miami Marlins on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field.

Play, however, lasted just seven minutes before umpires sent the game into a rain delay.

Mets pitcher Marcus Stroman threw just nine pitches.

Naturally, he wasn’t very happy with the decision by the Mets — the home team controls whether a game starts or not during rain or other weather — and made that known on social media during the delay.

The issue, he clarified in a later tweet, was simply about everybody’s safety.

“My fault for being concerned about the safety of my teammates and I,” he wrote, in part. “Lindor was standing in a puddle. Aguilar couldn’t hold his bat. I want to see everyone healthy for a full season!”

Mets manager Luis Rojas said after that while in hindsight, the decision to start the game may not have been a good one. Based on the forecasts they had, however, they thought it would be OK.

The game, though, never ended up getting played on Sunday. When Stroman will be able to pitch next, Rojas said, isn’t clear.

Stroman’s comments on Twitter, however, didn’t bother him.

"That's how Stro is, is outspoken. He's open, talking and he says what he feels," Rojas said, via ESPN. "He did not share anything this morning. He gets ready. He was doing his routine. He was just waiting for the communication, whether we were going to start on time or not."
