Jets RB Le'Veon Bell sent to IR with hamstring injury

The New York Jets placed Le’Veon Bell on the injured reserve list Tuesday and will be without him for at least three games.

Bell suffered a hamstring injury after he missed a pass and was tackled awkwardly in the second quarter of their 27-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. He stayed in the game and returned briefly in the third quarter before coach Adam Gase pulled him — something Gase regretted after.

“That play looked bad,” Gase said after the game. “I’m watching, and I thought it was going to be a touchdown, then he got grabbed. And kind of the way he planted and torqued, it looked really bad.

“I saw him grab his hamstring, and he wouldn’t come out. We come in at halftime. I let him go back in there. I was worried about it, and we were eventually like, ‘I can’t put you in there. We can’t take a chance on getting more hurt than you already are.’”

Jets sign RB Kalen Ballage

Bell finished the day with 14 rushing yards on six carries, and had 32 receiving yards. He will be eligible to play again in Week 5, thanks to new IR rules this season, for the Jets’ matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

Bell racked up just 789 yards on 245 carries and three touchdowns last season, the worst full season in his career.

The Jets announced on Tuesday that they signed former Miami Dolphins running back Kalen Ballage, who they tried to sign last month. He failed a team physical with a hamstring injury of his own, however, and became a free agent instead.

Ballage ran for 135 yards and three touchdowns for the Dolphins last season, his second in the league. The Jets also have Frank Gore at their disposal, and will likely bring up Josh Adams full time. Adams, who was on the practice squad, had two carries for eight yards and scored a touchdown late on Sunday.

The Jets also placed wide receiver Denzel Mims and linebacker Blake Cashman on IR on Tuesday. Mims has been dealing with a hamstring injury since before training camp started. Cashman hurt his groin early in Sunday’s loss.
