Nebraska assistant Keith Williams was sentenced to 30 days in jail, three years of probation and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine Wednesday after he pleaded no contest to third-offense driving under the influence, according to the Lincoln Journal-Star.

Prosecutors asked that Williams do the time in jail instead of house arrest since he did not serve jail time on two previous drunken-driving convictions, according to the paper. Williams was given time by a judge to apply for house arrest before he reports for jail March 3.

Williams would have to serve 23 days, with credit for good time, if he doesn’t get house arrest.

The Cornhuskers’ receivers coach, Williams had been cited Aug. 14 for driving under the influence after being involved in a crash with two other vehicles in Lincoln, Neb. Williams, who had two previous DUI convictions, was suspended for the first four games of the Huskers’ 2016 season.

The 45-year-old Williams had also been charged with careless driving stemming from the Aug. 14 incident, but prosecutors dropped that charge in exchange for his plea to the misdemeanor DUI offense.

Williams’ attorney, John Ball, said that Williams will apply for work release in order to continue coaching, according to the Journal-Star.

“He took this terrible situation for himself and turned it into a positive teaching moment,” Ball said at sentencing.

Since the arrest, Williams completed 30 hours of counseling for substance abuse and family issues, Ball said.

That shows a level of commitment that makes him a good candidate for probation, Ball told Zimmerman.

Williams agreed with his attorney’s comments and said he intends to learn from this.

Nebraska starts spring practice March 4. Williams’ contract with the Huskers runs through the 2017 season, which will be his third with the program.
