NBA Stock Watch: Isaiah Thomas rising, Victor Oladipo falling
STOCK UP
Isaiah Thomas: Over the last two weeks, he’s averaged 32.0 ppg, 7.0 apg and 4.0 3pt while shooting 51.1 percent from the floor and 95.7 from the line, when he’s been the No. 1 overall fantasy player. Thomas is recently coming off a game in which he scored 52 points while committing just two turnovers (he scored 29 points in the fourth quarter), and he’s 38-for-38 at the line over his last four contests. He’s going to win a lot of fantasy owners titles this year.
Nikola Jokic: He got off to a rough start, but over the last two weeks, Jokic has averaged 18.7 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 5.7 apg and 0.9 spg while shooting 61.9 percent from the field, when he’s been the No. 21 ranked player. During that timeframe, he’s actually been the No. 8 ranked player on a per-36 minute basis, as Jokic is suddenly living up to expectations after a slow start.
Kent Bazemore: He had a dud Thursday and has been a bust this season after breaking out last year, but his Usage Rate is about to see a huge boost with Kyle Korver traded to Cleveland, and Paul Millsap is on the block as well. Bazemore was a top-75 player last season.
James Johnson: Over the last week, he’s averaged 18.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 5.0 apg, 1.0 spg, 2.0 bpg and 3.3 3pt while shooting 90.9 percent from the line, when he’s been a top-20 fantasy player. And he’s going to continue seeing even more work with Justice Winslow officially out for the season. The Heat are essentially tanking, so Johnson is going to have a big role moving forward.
Malcolm Brogdon: Getting more run of late and available in nearly 50 percent of Yahoo leagues, Brogdon is someone to pick up in deeper leagues. He’s averaged 13.0 shots from the field over the past three games and remains a cheap option in DFS.
STOCK DOWN
Victor Oladipo: Most thought the move to Oklahoma City (including myself) would be a boost for Oladipo’s fantasy value, but he’s barely been a top-100 player this season, and over the last month, he’s averaged just 13.3 points with zero blocks totaled and shooting 40.3 percent from the field, when he’s been ranked the No. 193 player. The Thunder have a solid Pace (100.0), but their Offensive Efficiency is middle of the pack, and while Oladipo has played better of late since returning from his wrist injury, he’s quite clearly not lived up to draft day expectations.
Dirk Nowitzki: Nowitzki’s net rating is minus-21.3 points per 100 possessions, which ranks sixth worst among the 392 players who have appeared in at least 10 games this season. He barely ranks as a top-200 fantasy player, even on a per-game basis. Terrific career, but the end might be here.
Derrick Rose: Shooting 43.9 percent with so few steals and blocks, Rose hasn’t been a top-150 player over the past month. He’s owned in 85 percent of Yahoo leagues, which is understandable, but Knicks have lost six straight, and Rose hasn’t been helping his fantasy owners much.
Rondae Hollis-Jefferson: He’s a popular DFS pick because of his price, but Hollis-Jefferson hasn’t been a top-200 player this season in year two in the league despite given a bigger opportunity. He’s shooting 39.0 percent from the field.
Rajon Rondo: He’s always been overrated in 9-cat leagues, but Rondo is now behind Michael Carter-Williams and Jerian Grant on the point guard depth chart in Chicago. Still owned in 70 percent of Yahoo leagues, he can safely be dropped in all. His career is at a crossroads to say the least.
