Mavericks rookie Shane Larkin breaks ankle

Dallas Mavericks rookie guard Shane Larkin broke his ankle in summer-league practice and is expected to be sidelined two to three months, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Mavericks acquired Larkin with the 18th overall pick in last month's NBA draft after moving back two spots through trades with the Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks.

Larkin, 20, entered the draft after two seasons at Miami. As a sophomore, he averaged 14.5 points, 4.6 assists and 3.8 rebounds while helping lead the Hurricanes to the ACC championship and the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.

The Mavericks strengthened their backcourt Friday by agreeing to a three-year, $30 million contract with free-agent guard Monta Ellis. The Mavericks previously had also reached deals with free agent guards Jose Calderon and Gal Mekel.
