Ali’i Niumatalolo is no longer a walk-on at Utah.

Niumatalolo, the son of Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo, was awarded a scholarship on Thursday. And his father had a role in helping with that presentation.

Ali’i found out during a team meeting. When a video started playing on the screen behind coach Kyle Whittingham, it was Ken and the Navy football team with a purported message of good luck to the Utah football team.

As you can see, it was a little more than a good luck message. Ken did a good job of keeping the suspense for his son as long as he could.

Ali’i, a junior, has played both fullback and tight end in his first two seasons at Utah and has been a special teams contributor. He joined the team ahead of the 2017 season after serving his Mormon mission in Chile between high school and college.
