It was announced earlier this month that Karl Urban would be joining the film as series icon Johnny Cage, leading the ragtag bunch as they protect the Earthrealm from the Outworld. Simon McQuoid will return to the director’s chair, with Jeremy Slater penning the script.
Plot and other cast details have been kept under wraps, but it is expected that Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee and Joe Taslim will reprise their roles as Cole Young, Sonya Blade and Sub-Zero, respectively.
It’s set to be a busy year for the franchise, with the 12th main instalment in the video game series being announced earlier this year. Mortal Kombat 1 will serve as a soft-reboot for the series, with the plot following the events of 2019’s Mortal Kombat 11.
The story will be set in a new universe following Liu Kang’s actions, with the game offering fresh interpretations for characters such as Sub-Zero, Kitana, Mileena, Johnny Cage and Raiden.
A first trailer for the game was released earlier this week, with the teaser mixing a grounded tone with the series’ trademark gory violence. The game will also boast a new innovation in the shape of Kameo Fighters, which can assist you during a brawl.
There is no release date for Mortal Kombat 2. Mortal Kombat 1 will be released on September 19.
