Marred in an eight-game losing streak, the Montreal Canadien announced on Monday that the club has called up top goaltending prospect Cayden Primeau from the AHL’s Laval Rocket.

The move followed the team’s decision to place goaltender Keith Kinkaid on waivers earlier on Monday. In six appearances with the Habs, Kinkaid had one win to go with a .875 save percentage and a 4.24 goals-against-average.

Primeau was selected in the seventh round of the 2017 NHL draft, but his strong play since being drafted has exceeded his late-round selection. In 2018-19, Primeau was awarded the Mike Richter Award as the NCAA’s top collegiate goalie. Additionally, he backstopped the United States of America to a silver medal during the 2019 World Junior Championships.

Cayden is the son of former NHL player Keith Primeau, who played 15 seasons in the league with four different teams. The younger Primeau has played 12 games with Laval and owns a .910 save percentage and a 2.58 GAA.

Given the recent struggles of the team and starting netminder Carey Price, Primeau could be counted upon to get the Canadiens back on track while the former Hart Trophy winner sorts out his game. Price has allowed 19 goals in his past four outings.
