Friday MLS Forecast - Week 20: Contemplating the future after an anticipated departure

Fredy Montero's loan move from the Seattle Sounders to Colombian club Millonarios appears to be closing in on becoming final.

Montero's representative confirmed that the final details in the proposed deal are being handled in an interview with a Colombian radio station on Friday. According to reports from Colombia, the deal is a six-month loan that comes with an option for Millonarios to purchase Montero outright for $4.5 million.

"It has been hard for Seattle seeing its star leaving, but we think that Fredy's time in Seattle is done," Montero's agent, Helmut Wenin, told RCN Antena 2. "We are grateful for the opportunity, the great treatment Fredy had from the Sounders and MLS, but we think it is time for Fredy to take his chances.

"We are just closing the details with Millonarios, and we hope that the deal can be made public shortly."

Montero has scored at least 10 goals in each of his four seasons with the Sounders, totaling 47 goals and 34 assists in that time, but he came under fire for not scoring in any of the club's postseason matches in the last four years. Once the move goes final, he will join a club coming off a championship season in his native country and one that will compete in the Copa Libertadores in a group with Mexican champion Club Tijuana, FIFA Club World Cup champions Corinthians and Bolivian side San Jose.

"Fredy is excited about the chance to play in Copa Libertadores," Wenin said. "It is hard from him to move on from the great years he has had in MLS, but it is in his best interest to try another experience right now."

Montero's looming departure means that the Sounders' attack will be centered on U.S. national team forward Eddie Johnson, with other players such as Sammy Ochoa and David Estrada likely expected to shoulder more of the load.
