A good idea by the Miami Marlins is now taking off all around Major League Baseball. The Marlins announced Monday that they’d wear caps from Stoneman Douglas High School — the school where last week’s shooting in Parkland, Florida was responsible for 17 deaths — in their Grapefruit League opener on Friday.

A day later, Major League Baseball tells Yahoo Sports that plans are in place for all 30 teams to wear the caps for their spring-training openers. The caps will be worn during batting practice on Friday by 28 teams. The only two that aren’t — the Royals and Rangers — don’t play Friday, so they’ll wear them before their first games on Saturday.

From there, commissioner Rob Manfred approved that any team that wants to wear the caps during its game can do so. An MLB spokesperson says the league doesn’t have a specific count of which teams will do that, but expects most — if not all — will.

It all started last week with just a few teams that were interested, then MLB opened it up to all 30 teams, and they’ve all been responsive to the idea. Making the caps now falls on New Era, MLB’s official cap maker, which was up to the task of delivering upward of 2,000 caps to teams by Thursday night.

Clubs will also be able to auction off the caps after their games, if they so desire. The teams can donate to charities of their choice, but MLB is recommending teams donate to the Broward Education Foundation, which has organized the official Stoneman Douglas Victims Fund.

It was a great gesture when the Marlins wanted to wear the caps and it’s a great gesture now that more teams around MLB want to do it. While we haven’t heard which teams will wear the caps just yet, Chicago Cubs star Anthony Rizzo is an alum of Douglas High and left spring training to go home and help his community heal.
