Yahoo Sports MLB roundup: White Sox beat A's as Chris Bassitt hit by line drive
Jake Lamb and Jose Abreu smacked three-run home runs and Reynaldo Lopez pitched five shutout innings as the host Chicago White Sox defeated the Oakland Athletics 9-0 on Tuesday night.
Relievers Ryan Burr and Mike Wright Jr. combined with Lopez (2-0) to complete a four-hit shutout, dealing Oakland its third straight loss.
The A's endured a scare when All-Star right-hander Chris Bassitt was carted off the field in the second inning after Chicago's Brian Goodwin hit a liner lined that struck Bassitt sharply in the head.
The A's later tweeted that Bassitt was "conscious and aware" and being taken to a Chicago hospital for treatment. After the game, manager Bob Melvin told the media, "We don't think the eye is a problem at this point. Felt like it was below it. He's got some cuts and used some stitches. He's in a scan and we'll know about potential fractures tomorrow or later tonight."
Bassitt (12-4) was charged with three runs and three hits in one-plus inning while striking out one batter.
Luke Voit hit a go-ahead two-run single with one out in the fifth inning, Jonathan Loaisiga escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh and New York held on to beat visiting Boston in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.
The Yankees loaded the bases in the fifth when Garrett Whitlock (4-2) and Josh Taylor combined to issue three straight one-out walks. Voit popped the first pitch he saw into short center field. Second baseman Enrique Hernandez tried to make a running over-the-shoulder catch but the ball dropped a few feet over him and center fielder Hunter Renfroe couldn't make the play.
After Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge scored on Voit's clutch hit, pinch hitter Giancarlo Stanton lined an RBI single to score Joey Gallo.
Yankees 2, Red Sox 0 (Game 2)
Luis Gil pitched 4 2/3 effective innings and Luke Voit and Giancarlo Stanton homered as New York completed a doubleheader sweep of visiting Boston.
The Yankees won their fifth straight and prevailed for the 17th time in 22 games. They ended the night tied with Boston for second place in the American League East and in a three-way tie for the two A.L. wild-card berths with Boston and the Oakland Athletics.
Gil allowed three hits, survived four walks and struck out four in a 71-pitch outing. Gil has tossed 15 2/3 scoreless innings -- the longest scoreless streak by a Yankee to start a career, breaking the mark set by Joba Chamberlain (15 1/3 innings over 12 relief appearances) in 2007.
Rockies 7, Padres 3
C.J. Cron homered and had two hits, German Marquez had two hits and pitched strongly into the seventh inning, and host Colorado beat San Diego.
Charlie Blackmon also homered while Brendan Rodgers and Elias Diaz added two hits apiece for Colorado.
Jake Cronenworth had two hits, including an inside-the-park home run, and Fernando Tatis Jr. and Tommy Pham went deep for the Padres, who have lost six of their last seven.
Giants 3, Mets 2
Tommy La Stella and Evan Longoria homered to back the strong pitching of right-hander Logan Webb as San Francisco made it two straight over visiting New York.
Webb (7-3) was pulled after giving up just two runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings. It was his 11th straight start in which he allowed two or fewer runs. He walked one and struck out eight.
Pete Alonso hit a two-run homer for the Mets, who lost their fifth straight to fall under .500 at 59-60 and 4 1/2 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East.
Dodgers 4, Pirates 3
Matt Beaty hit a two-run double in the fifth inning and four Los Angeles relievers combined to give up one run over the final 4 1/3 innings in a victory over visiting Pittsburgh.
AJ Pollock had a two-run single for the Dodgers, who won for the ninth time in their last 10 games despite two throwing errors from Gavin Lux in his first career appearance at third base.
Wil Crowe gave up two runs on five hits over four innings for the Pirates, who lost for the 14th time in their past 16 games. Pittsburgh also lost its 15th consecutive game against the Dodgers.
Nationals 12, Blue Jays 6
Rookie Riley Adams had three hits, including a home run, against his former team and Washington ended a seven-game losing streak by beating visiting Toronto.
Adams, obtained by Washington for closer Brad Hand on July 29, added a two-run double and a single for his first career three-hit game. Yadiel Hernandez had a homer and a two-run single for the Nationals.
Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. each had two hits for the Blue Jays, who have lost four of five. Toronto's Teoscar Hernandez continued his torrid stretch with a single and a two-run homer, his fourth homer in six games.
Cubs 2, Reds 1
Ian Happ homered and Kyle Hendricks scattered three hits over six innings to help visiting Chicago snap their season-high 12-game losing streak by beating Cincinnati.
Codi Heuer held the Reds scoreless over the final two innings to record his second career save and first this season.
The Cubs took their first lead since Saturday in Miami when Frank Schwindel doubled home Rafael Ortega against Reds rookie starter Vladimir Gutierrez with one out in the third.
Braves 2, Marlins 0
Jorge Soler hit a go-ahead single in the eighth inning, leading first-place Atlanta over host Miami.
Austin Riley added a 395-foot home run in the ninth to pad Atlanta's lead. It was his 26th homer of the season. The Braves, who have won five straight games and 12 of 14, used five pitchers to nail down the shutout. Will Smith earned his 26th save in 30 chances.
Miami starter Sandy Alcantara (7-11) took a tough-luck loss. Entering the eighth, he had a streak of 14 consecutive scoreless innings, spread out over two games. But, after Soler's RBI single, Alcantara's final line over eight innings included seven strikeouts, five hits, one walk and one run.
Diamondbacks 3, Phillies 2
Josh VanMeter smacked a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the sixth inning to help Arizona register a victory over Philadelphia in Phoenix.
Josh Rojas went 3-for-4 and had a run-scoring double for Arizona, which has won four of its past five games. VanMeter was 2-for-3, and the home run was his fourth of the season.
Bryce Harper homered for the Phillies, who have lost five of their past seven games. Philadelphia dropped to 2 1/2 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East race.
Angels 8, Tigers 2
Jo Adell snapped a 2-2 tie with a ninth-inning grand slam and Los Angeles went on to defeat host Detroit thanks to a six-run finish.
Adell's first homer of the season came with two out after the Angels loaded the bases against Gregory Soto (4-3) on two walks sandwiched around a single by Jose Iglesias. Kurt Suzuki went back-to-back with Adell with his fourth homer of the season.
Jared Walsh walked four times and scored a run for the Angels, while Shohei Ohtani also reached four times on a single and three free passes while adding a run scored. Grayson Greiner had two hits and scored twice for Detroit. Miguel Cabrera remained at 499 career homers, going 0-for-2 with two walks.
Rays 10, Orioles 0
Mike Zunino homered for the fifth straight game and Nelson Cruz blasted two to help Tampa Bay deal Baltimore its 13th straight loss Tuesday, trouncing them in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Zunino ripped a two-run shot, his career-best 26th home run, off Orioles left-hander John Means in a three-run fourth inning.
Cruz produced five RBIs with his two blasts, and Randy Arozarena's hitting streak moved to nine games in a 4-for-5 outing. The Rays are 13-1 against the Orioles this season.
Royals 3, Astros 1
Rookie Daniel Lynch pitched seven strong innings as Kansas City defeated visiting Houston.
The Royals, who have won the first two games of the four-game series, earned their 30th come-from-behind victory of the season. Lynch (3-3) allowed one run on four hits and three walks while striking out five against the team with the best batting average and on-base percentage in the majors.
Framber Valdez (8-4) took the loss after giving up three runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings with one walk and five strikeouts. He allowed at least one hit in each inning and worked around most of the trouble.
Brewers 2, Cardinals 0
Corbin Burnes, Brad Boxberger, Devin Williams and Josh Hader combined to throw a four-hitter as visiting Milwaukee blanked St. Louis.
Burnes (8-4) allowed just two hits and two walks in six innings. Boxberger, Williams and Hader worked an inning each, with Hader earning his 24th save.
Kolten Wong reached base four times and drove home a run for the Brewers, who improved to 7-1 on their 10-game road trip and snapped the Cardinals' six-game win streak.
Mariners 3, Rangers 1
Tyler Anderson won his first game since being acquired by Seattle before the trade deadline, and Luis Torrens homered in the win over Texas in Arlington, Texas.
Ty France and Mitch Haniger hit sacrifice flies for the Mariners, who won for the fifth time in their past six games. Andy Ibanez homered for the Rangers, who were attempting to win consecutive games for the first time since a three-game streak from July 31-Aug. 2.
Torrens' 14th homer in the top of the ninth inning went in and out of the glove of Rangers center fielder DJ Peters. Anderson (6-8) allowed one run on three hits in six innings. Mariners starter Taylor Hearn (2-4) went five innings and gave up two runs on five hits.
Indians 3, Twins 1
Daniel Johnson hit a two-run homer and Eli Morgan pitched six shutout innings to earn the win as Cleveland defeated Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Johnson had two hits and Yu Chang doubled and scored a run for the Indians. Morgan (2-5), who pitched out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the second, allowed three singles and walked two while striking out eight. Emmanuel Clase struck out two of the three batters he faced during a 1-2-3 ninth for his 17th save.
Jorge Polanco had two hits for Minnesota, which had a three-game winning streak snapped while finishing 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Bailey Ober (1-2) took the loss, allowing three runs -- two earned - on five hits in six innings. He struck out three and didn't walk a batter.
