Blue Jays' George Springer lays out for absurd diving grab vs. Red Sox

George Springer has been very solid for the Blue Jays early this season, and his impressive start continued on Monday night with these absurd catch-of-the-year candidate in a game versus the Boston Red Sox.

With two out in the bottom of the fifth in a scoreless game, Red Sox catcher Kevin Plawecki put a good swing on a pitch from Jose Berrios. It appeared he had himself an extra base hit, until Springer came flying into left center field and leapt into the air to make a fantastic diving grab.

As mentioned, a healthy Springer has been very good for the Jays so far this year, hitting .263 with three home runs through 15 games. On top of that, his defense has been stellar, with this catch helping prove that case. Of course, the concerns with Springer since becoming a Blue Jay haven’t been related to his abilities, but rather his injury troubles.

The 32-year-old struggled to stay on the field for large chunks of last season, appearing in just 78 games due to first an oblique injury, then a quad ailment which bugged him for the majority of the 2021 campaign. This season, he appears to be fully healthy and is giving fans and general manager Ross Atkins everything they could have hoped for.

Springer's catch proved to be a huge momentum booster for the Blue Jays, as they were able to put up the first run of the game in the bottom half of the same inning and added five more through the remainder of the contest to walk away with a 6-2 win. They will look to keep the good times rolling tomorrow night in the second of a four-game series versus the Red Sox.
