Mix Diskerud vented his frustrations with New York City FC ... in a poem

To be perfectly honest with you, we’re not so into poetry here at FC Yahoo. Maybe we’re just not cultured enough, but we believe the point of words is to communicate information. Or at the very least emotion. Poetry does neither, leaving you grasping for subtext that is willfully obscured.

Anyway, former United States men’s national team playmaker Mix Diskerud – who is only 26 but hasn’t appeared for the USA since March 25, possibly curtailing his international career after 38 games and six goals – does not share this lack of appreciation. The Norwegian-born Diskerud is American soccer’s poet laureate, often musing in rhymes and koans on his Twitter and Instagram accounts.

On Sunday, he opted to air his frustrations with his Major League Soccer team, New York City FC, in the form of poetry.

Somebody told me I’m not part of a plan
and if he was I – he’d run like the others ran
’cause the budget is tight
and binding contracts might
be broken, to improve 5-6 positions – in exchange for only one man.

He went on to say; “the message is clear –
unless you’re clueless – ’cause you’ve lived it all’year
since the budget is tight
and binding contracts might
not need to be broken if…. you crack, kneel or leave the hemisphere”

Who could tell so straight and clearly
tales of destiny I fight sincerely
when mental games
are attempting aims
to make me rage severely?

On and on the conversation went
about money spent
and special rules
and mgt’s tools
and something about allocation being different cent

I wish I had
right there – my pad
’cause then my favorite line
fused by Robin Williams spine
would play dead poets – real bad

We didn’t pay a ton of attention in English class in high school – or any other class – so we have a fairly hard time gleaning meaning from intentionally vague lines. But here’s the context: Diskerud was brought to MLS with much fanfare ahead of NYCFC’s inaugural season in 2015 and was, for a time, a fan favorite. In fact, he scored the club’s first goal in MLS history. In 2016, however, under new head coach Patrick Vieira, he withered and then faded from the picture. He made no appearances at all after June 2 and played just 12 times the whole year.

Diskerud’s contract appears to have some time left on it. And at $761,000 per year, he’s a pricey player with defensive limitations so severe that NYCFC, which clearly has no more use for him, hasn’t found a taker among other MLS teams either – or, from the looks of it, anywhere else.

What Diskerud seems to be saying is that the club wants him to rip up a guaranteed contract or it will continue the freeze-out. Diskerud was left out of the club’s preseason camp and his No. 10 was given away to new signing Maxi Moralez.

The most likely outcome seems to be that NYCFC buys out Diskerud’s contract before Tuesday’s roster compliance deadline. Or maybe it already has.

It’s hard to tell. Because poetry is a pointlessly inexact way of saying things.
