Minor Developments: All-Rookie Team, Alternates

Also see: All-Rookie Team

April is upon us and the season is right around the corner. We covered our All-Rookie Team last week, but there are still plenty of names to talk about who could make a fantasy impact in 2012. Here are some others worth discussing for the upcoming year.

Brett Jackson, OF, Cubs: The Cubs' top prospect, Jackson draws rave reviews for his power and speed combination, tools that makes scouts and fantasy players salivate. He swings and misses quite a bit, but if his plate discipline improves, he could be a superstar. To me, he looks a lot like Grady Sizemore (when healthy), and could produce similar numbers at the plate upon reaching the majors.

Chris Parmelee, 1B, Twins: The path to playing time is more clear with the questions surrounding Justin Morneau's health and Parmelee's ability to play first base, making him an intriguing play in deeper mixed and AL-only formats. Parmelee hit over his head in his cup of coffee last season (.355, 4 HR, 14 RBI), but showed the same solid plate discipline he displayed in the minors, which is a great sign. His upside could be comparable to Lucas Duda's rookie year.

Danny Hultzen, SP, Mariners: Very close to a finished product, and shouldn't need a whole lot of time in the minors before finally reaching Seattle. Hultzen generally works in the low-90s, but can reach 96 at his peak. He draws high praise for his plus changeup, and also works in an effective slider. Lefties with his arsenal don't grow on trees, making him a top of the rotation talent in the pitching-rich Mariners farm system.

Drew Pomeranz, SP, Rockies: The prize in the Ubaldo Jimenez trade, Pomeranz owns a plus fastball that he commands well, along with a knockout hammer curve and developing change. He blew through the minors last year, and while there may be some growing pains for the young lefty in '12, he has the stuff to be the next Rockies ace in the very near future.

Drew Smyly, SP, Tigers: Jacob Turner gets much of the praise in the Tigers system, but it's Smyly who locked down the fifth starter job with a strong spring (12.2 IP, 2.84 ERA, 10/5 K/BB). The lefty has very strong control, and attacks hitters with a plethora of pitches (fastball, slider, curveball, changeup, cutter). With only 45.2 innings over High-A, it will be interesting to see if his strong strikeout (10.45 K/9) and walk (2.96 BB/9) rates transfer to the majors. Worth the relatively small risk in AL-only formats.

Starling Marte, OF, Pirates: His debut will be tied closely to the performances of current Pirates outfielders Alex Presley and Jose Tabata, both of whom have much to prove as major league starters. If either falters, Marte could get the call, especially after murdering the ball this spring. He could afford to improve on cutting down his strikeouts and taking more walks, but still offers significant power and speed upside to go along with a strong batting average.

Anthony Rizzo, 1B, Cubs: The knock on him last season was a slow bat and he'll start the year at Triple-A to continue to refine his swing. Rizzo offers enormous power upside, and could be a 30-homer bat in the majors within a few years if things click. He hit well this spring (.364) and could be summoned in a hurry if Brian LaHair struggles out of the gate.

Leonys Martin, OF, Rangers: Still one of my personal favorites, despite being ruled out of the center field battle early this spring. He showed a little pop this spring, to go along with his other tools, especially the plus speed. Josh Hamilton isn't the long term solution in center field, and it could only be a matter of time before we see Martin patrolling the outfield in Arlington.

There are plenty of other names out there, but that's what the comments are for. State your case for omitted players you like in 2012. Keep rookie eligibility in mind when listing additional names.
