Minecraft Steve joins Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as playable character

Nintendo revealed Steve from Minecraft as the latest addition to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lineup.

The company announced the news during a livestream event hosted on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel. Masahiro Sakurai, the director of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, talked more about the Minecraft x Smash Bros. collaboration following a trailer introducing Steve to the cast.

“Yes, that’s right,” Sakurai said during the livestream, “Minecraft, the best-selling game in the world, is coming to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game. Even I didn’t think this day would come.”

Steve is one of the two default characters that the player can spawn in as in Minecraft and his appearance can be swapped with alternate skins for Alex (other default character), Zombie and Enderman. The packaged DLC will also introduce a new Minecraft-themed map and soundtracks.

Judging from the trailer, I’m really digging Steve (there’s your one Minecraft pun for this article). His moveset seems to have a little bit of everything. He’s got a defensive lava attack to zone out enemies that get too close, a fishing lure to yoink in opponents and send them flying with a jump pad to set up juggles and a build ability to block off aggressors. Basically, he plays like a giant troll and anyone who masters him is sure to make their friends nerdrage.

Sakurai went on in the livestream to discuss how difficult it was to implement Steve. Steve required an immense amount of programming to bring to life and the Smash team also had to rework all the existing maps in the game to account for Steve’s new block building ability.

The director ended the stream by announcing another upcoming event, Mr. Sakurai Presents ‘Steve & Alex,” which will air on Oct. 3 at 10:30 a.m. ET, also on Nintendo’s YouTube channel.
