Michigan LB Devin Bush declares for NFL draft, not medically cleared for bowl game

Devin Bush’s college football career has come to an end.

Bush, the star Michigan linebacker, announced Wednesday morning that he has decided to skip his senior season and declare for the NFL draft. Bush, who injured his hip in the regular season finale against Ohio State, says he has not been medically cleared to play in the Peach Bowl against Florida.

“Despite getting treatment every day, I have not been cleared to practice or play in the Peach Bowl due to the hip injury I suffered in the last game. Due to this injury, I have thought hard about my future in football,” Bush said.

“Having been injured I realize how fleeting this sport can be. It has always been a dream of mine to follow in my father’s footsteps and play in the NFL. This injury has made me realize how important this goal is to me and my family. Therefore I have decided to forgo my senior season and enter the 2019 NFL draft.”

Bush was a consensus All-American this season, totaling 66 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. As a sophomore, Bush was one of the breakout players on the UM defense. That year, he compiled 95 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.

Bush is considered a first-round prospect by many NFL draft analysts.

Bush becomes the second Michigan junior to declare for the draft, joining defensive lineman Rashan Gary. Gary is skipping the Peach Bowl to prepare for the pre-draft process.

Other Michigan juniors could join Bush and Gary in the draft with players like cornerbacks Lavert Hill and David Long also considered draft prospects. Quarterback Shea Patterson is also weighing his options.
