Michigan, John Beilein agree to five-year rollover deal through 2022-23

John Beilein isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

The University of Michigan and Beilein, the program’s all-time wins leader, have agreed to a five-year contract extension that runs through the 2022-23 season, the school announced Wednesday. The deal also extends one year every year until either Beilein or the school decides not to renew it.

Beilein is entering his 12th year at Michigan

Beilein is 248-143 in 11 years at the helm in Ann Arbor. The 65-year-old New York native got his first Division I head coaching opportunity in 1992 at Canisius. He moved on to Richmond in 1997 and then West Virginia in 2002. After a successful tenure in Morgantown that included an Elite Eight run, a Sweet Sixteen run and an NIT championship, Beilein jumped to a then-struggling Michigan program in 2007. The Wolverines made the NCAA tournament in Beilein’s second year, ending a tournament draught that had existed since 1998.

Since, Beilein has only continued to grow the program into one of the most successful and consistent in the nation. The Wolverines have made seven of the last eight NCAA tournaments and have played in two title games — 2013 and 2018. Michigan is coming off back-to-back Big Ten tournament titles and has also won the conference’s regular season crown twice under Beilein.

Beilein’s 748 NCAA wins are 44th all-time.

Beilein: ‘The future of men’s basketball is bright’

Though the Detroit Pistons pursued Beilein earlier this offseason, Beilein announced he would be the Michigan coach “in the years to come” in early June.
