Michael Phelps will analyze swimming as part of NBC's broadcasting team at Tokyo Olympics

One of the greatest Olympians of all-time will be going to the Tokyo Olympics after all. Michael Phelps will analyze swimming as part of NBC's broadcasting team at the games.

The network announced the news Monday. Executive producer and president of NBC's Olympics production Molly Solomon said she's "thrilled to have [Phelps] join us in Tokyo and our audience will benefit from hearing the perspective of the most decorated Olympian of all time."

It's not the first time Phelps has served as a swimming commentator. He filled that same role with NBC during Olympic swimming trials.

Phelps will serve as a primetime correspondent during the event. He'll join Dan Hicks and Rowdy Gaines in the booth.

Michael Phelps among most successful Olympians ever

Phelps should bring plenty of expertise to the booth. Throughout his Olympic career, Phelps has won 28 total medals and 23 gold medals. Both figures are records among Olympic athletes.

Phelps should be a familiar name to those who have watched recent Olympics. It wasn't long ago that Phelps set the record for most gold medals at a single Olympics. Phelps took home 8 golds at the 2008 Beijing Games.

One of those gold medals came during the 4X100 freestyle relay, which featured one of the greatest comebacks in Olympics history.

Phelps continued competing in the Olympics through the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro. He won five golds and one silver medal at the event. Phelps retired from competition following his performance in Rio.
