Tua Tagovailoa reached out to Joe Burrow after his season-ending knee injury

Tua Tagovailoa made sure to reach out to Joe Burrow after the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback went down with a season-ending knee injury last month — something he’s all too familiar with.

Tagovailoa suffered his own season-ending hip injury while at Alabama last season. Though the two were set to face off this week when the Miami Dolphins host the Bengals on Sunday, Tagovailoa wanted to make sure the reigning Heisman Trophy winner is OK.

“Injuries like that are never fun,” Tagovailoa said, via ESPN’s Cameron Wolfe.

“I know he’d love to be able to go out there and compete against us. I sent him my prayers. I wish him the best.”

Burrow undergoing reconstructive knee surgery this week

Burrow took a shot to the left knee in the third quarter of their 20-9 loss to the Washington Football Team last month, and had to be carted off the field. He tore his ACL and MCL, and is now set to undergo reconstructive knee surgery this week in Los Angeles.

Burrow racked up more than 2,600 yards and had 13 touchdowns while completing more than 65 percent of his passes for the Bengals this season.

Tagovailoa is battling his own injury, though it’s nowhere near as severe. He missed Miami’s 20-3 win against the New York Jets last weekend with a left thumb injury he sustained in practice after jamming it on a teammate’s helmet.

He practiced on Wednesday with black tape around his wrist and thumb, but was limited, per Wolfe. It’s unclear if he’ll take the field on Sunday. Tagovailoa has started four games for the Dolphins this season, and thrown for 602 yards and six touchdowns without an interception.

Though the Tagovailoa-Burrow matchup was one that many had been looking forward to, it will now have to wait.
