Ryan Fitzpatrick leads Dolphins to dominant win as Jimmy Garoppolo, 49ers struggle

Tua Tagovailoa will have to wait at least another week.

Fitzmagic is alive and well in Miami

Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick led Miami to a dominant 43-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers while throwing three touchdowns and 350 yards through the air.

Fitzpatrick didn’t waste any time on Sunday, connecting for a 47-yard pass to Preston Williams right out of the gate. He capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Adam Shaheen to give the Dolphins a 7-0 lead.

He then mounted a quick seven-play, 48-yard drive to give the Dolphins a 14-0 lead at the end of the first. After a Niners score early in the second, Fitzpatrick found DeVante Parker for a deep 22-yard score to retake the 14-point lead.

He delivered yet again in the third, finding Williams for a perfect 32-yard score to push their lead to 23.

By then, the Dolphins just held on to snag the 26-point win, their second in three games.

Fitzpatrick finished 22-of-28 for 350 yards, his best outing of the season.

While there was plenty of talk this week about it finally being time for Tagovailoa — the former Alabama standout who the Dolphins selected with their first pick in the draft earlier this year — it seems as if Fitzpatrick has solidified his place for at least another week in Miami.

Jimmy Garoppolo benched, replaced by C.J. Beathard

Jimmy Garoppolo’s return from injury didn’t go as planned on Sunday afternoon.

Garoppolo, who missed the 49ers’ past two games with an ankle sprain, threw two interceptions and had a career-low 15.7 passer rating in the first half while leading San Francisco into a 30-7 hole.

Niners coach Kyle Shanahan decided at halftime that Garoppolo had enough. Shanahan benched Garoppolo in the second half to “protect” him, and replaced him with backup C.J. Beathard, who jumped ahead of Nick Mullens on the depth chart last week.

Beathard finished 9-of-18 for 94 yards and threw a touchdown in the third quarter, when he hit Kendrick Bourne for a 19-yard score.

Mullens took over for Garoppolo after he first went down in Week 2 and led them to an easy win the next week against the New York Giants. He struggled last week against the Philadelphia Eagles and was benched in the second half after throwing a pick-6. Beathard replaced him in that game and was elevated to the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.

Though it appeared that Garoppolo was healthy headed into Sunday’s loss, he isn’t back to his old self just yet.
