While the French first lady opted for a classic sheath with a matching jacket, Trump channeled Dynasty in a belted skirt suit with an asymmetrical peplum detail. The blazer is a Michael Kors design priced at $2,195.
All eyes were on her dramatic choice of headgear, however: an oversized white hat with a wide, flat brim, also by Michael Kors.
Social media was quick to react to the look, with some praising it as “classy” and others poking fun. Some suggested that the hat should have its own Twitter account.

Or, she may just inspire some jokes — and comparisons to Curious George‘s Man in the Yellow Hat and Scandal‘s Olivia Pope.

Melania's hat keeps Trump from making contact for a real kiss. Brilliant. pic.twitter.com/JEvUaJZU5q

Melania Trump is dressed how I would to go undercover to spy on a friend’s date just to be extra about it.

Melania looks ridiculous in that hat, maybe she’s trying to hide her disdain for Trump under that hat

I'm getting serious Alejandro Jodorowsky vibes from Melania Trump's hat pic.twitter.com/4Y0u2LChTd

Is Melania Trump’s white hat a symbol of morality like Olivia Pope’s? pic.twitter.com/JZRHL7iuOi

Perhaps more controversially, she did not remove her headgear while the French and the U.S. national anthems were played.

What’s your take? Did the style risk pay off — and should she have taken it off during the anthems?
