McGeady retires from professional football

Aiden McGeady has announced his retirement from professional football, over 20 years after his senior debut.

Beginning his career at Celtic, the 38-year-old went on to feature 231 times for the Glasgow club, scoring 36 goals in those outings.

After winning four leagues and three domestic cups, McGeady departed for Spartak Moscow in 2010 for £9.5m, which made the former Republic of Ireland player the most expensive export from Scottish football at the time.

The Scotland-born winger, who won 93 caps for Ireland, then had spells with the likes of Everton, Sheffield Wednesday, Preston and Sunderland before returning north of the border in 2022 to join Hibernian.

He made 14 appearances for the Edinburgh side in an injury-hit spell and joined Ayr United last July.

After departing Somerset Park a fortnight ago, McGeady's retirement was confirmed on Thursday.
