Matthews, Marner featured in Maple Leafs corn maze
The Toronto Maple Leafs’ impressive crop of young talent has received a fitting tribute.
The Hunter Brothers Farm in Florenceville-Bristol, New Brunswick honoured the team’s centennial season with an elaborate corn maze featuring the likeness of rookie sensations Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner.
In typical hockey fan fashion, Chip Hunter (one of the Hunter brothers) initially planned on rolling out a Maple Leafs-themed maze this year to troll his brother-in-law, a die-hard Toronto fan. The original design was supposed to “commemorate” the 50th anniversary of the team’s most recent Stanley Cup season, but once the Hunters realized it was the 100th anniversary of the franchise they decided to go with that instead.
The Canadian farmers have been creating customized displays on one of their six-acre fields since 2003, including a number of hockey-related designs.
Here’s one celebrating Montreal’s centennial season in 2009, featuring Canadiens legend Jean Beliveau.
They also paid tribute to Patrick Roy with one upon his retirement in 2003.

Once we decide on the theme, we have a graphic designer draw up the maze. Once we are happy with the image our survey engineer plots GPS coordinates for the design on his computer. The 6-acre field is prepared and planted in a crisscross pattern to fill out the canopy. The surveyors then come in and lay out the design in the field using GPS and flags. The Hunter crew, equipped with a small sprayer, goes in and removes the corn which needs to be “erased” to make the paths. After several days of work making the trails we use a small drone to inspect the maze and fix any small mistakes.
The Maple Leafs will open training camp in two weeks, with their first pre-season game set for Sept. 18 against the Ottawa Senators.
