Maryland conducting a review of events following workout that led to Jordan McNair's hospitalization

Maryland athletic director Damon Evans provided a few details surrounding the May 29 team workout that led to the hospitalization of offensive lineman Jordan McNair.

McNair, 19, died Wednesday. Evans said the school, with the help of outside personnel, began a review after McNair was first hospitalized.

What Maryland said happened May 29

The Maryland football team gathered for a team workout that began at approximately 4:15 p.m. The workout, overseen by the team’s strength and conditioning staff with trainers also present, consisted of a baseline conditioning test.

That test was a series of “10 110s,” Evans said, referring to 10 110-yard runs. McNair completed the conditioning test and trainers noticed that he was having issues after he was done.

“Trainers noticed Jordan was having some difficulty recovering,” Evans said. “They began supporting active recovery and providing necessary care. Jordan was subsequently transferred to our training room in our football team house for further observation and continued care.

“At that time, medical personnel was called and 911 was dialed. EMS arrived on the scene and began supporting Jordan and he was transferred to the hospital at approximately 6 o’clock p.m.”

Evans provided few specifics other than the details above and did not reveal the cause of McNair’s death when asked by a reporter in attendance. A GoFundMe page set up for McNair’s medical expenses following his hospitalization said he received a liver transplant while in the hospital.

Evans also did not get into the type of care McNair received or the issues he was having with recovering from the conditioning workouts. The high temperature in College Park, Maryland, on May 29 was 82.

Evans also said the school was conducting a thorough review.

“We will move forward with the review and do it in a prudent manner but to make sure that it’s not one that is rushed and one that is done extensively,” Evans said.

Coach D.J. Durkin emotional

Maryland coach D.J. Durkin was on the verge of tears during his turn to speak at the press conference. McNair was a member of the team’s 2017 recruiting class and spent the season as a redshirt.

“It’s not reasonable that a 19-year-old should pass away. It’s not reasonable that a family, parents — his parents Marty and Tony should ever have to go through this. To work with such a tremendous person. As big as he was stature-wise his heart was much bigger.”
