‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Season 5 Premiere Is Just Two Days Away

Strap on your show corset and say, "Tits up!" because the fifth and final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is here. The hit Amazon Prime Video series returned on Friday, April 14, with three new episodes now available on the streaming platform.

This new season continues to chronicle the journey of Miriam “Midge” Maisel (played by Rachel Brosnahan) as she works toward making her big break as a stand-up comedian in 1961. But before she can make it in showbiz, she has navigate becoming the first "lady writer" on The Gordon Ford Show, help Susie with her talent management career, deal with the idiosyncrasies both her parents and in-laws, and co-parent her two children with ex-husband Joel. Nothing our girl can't handle, right?

When does The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 5 premiere?

If you're reading this, you really should be watching the new season because the show has already premiered!

The first three episodes are currently available to watch on Amazon Prime Video. After that initial release, the streaming platform will drop one episode each week until the finale on May 26, 2023. Here's when you can expect to watch each new episode on Amazon Prime Video:

Which cast members are returning for season 5?

Many familiar faces from season 4 are coming back around again. It was also reported that the show is expanding its cast this time. Here's everyone that will most likely return based on where last season left off, plus who to look out for:

New faces include Michael Cyril Creighton (Only Murders In The Building), Eddie Kaye Thomas (American Pie), Peter Friedman, Chloë Kerwin, Austin Basis, Josh Grisetti, and Lucas Kavner for recurring roles, per IMDb. Gilmore Girls alum Milo Ventimiglia also makes a reappearance as "Handsome Man."

What happens this season?

Currently, there aren't many details about the plot, but in an interview with Women's Health, show creator Amy Sherman-Palladino explained that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has, and always will, revolve around Midge and Susie's relationship.

"The emotional crux of this show was always Susie and Midge—and that's the enduring relationship," Sherman-Palladino previously told the publication. "This was a show about a woman discovering her ambition and how she follows through on it. And it was through Susie that she even got the idea to do this. And it was something she could not accomplish without Susie... their bond was what the show was really about."

So, this season, a main storyline will hinge on the evolution of their friendship. "When we're talking about, okay, last season, gotta land the plane, gotta bring it home, gotta make people feel like the journey was worth it, you had to lean into really what the heart and soul of the show was, which was Susie and Midge," Sherman-Palladino hints.

Plus, Rachel Brosnahan told fans that they are "definitely going to watch Midge’s star rise" this time around, per Extra.

And Midge's relationship with Lenny Bruce will also see more development. "Knowing that season 5 was going to be our last and that we only had so much turf to play on helped free up a little bit of what we did with [Lenny] personally," Sherman-Palladino and executive producer, writer, and director Dan Palladino told The Hollywood Reporter.

It's worth noting, though, that the real Lenny Bruce died in 1966 due to an accidental drug overdose, according to The Jewish Chronicle. That's only five years after where season 4 wrapped up, according to Digital Spy. With a time jump, this detail could be included in the show's upcoming season (but I hope not).

There's also more in store for Joel and Mei's love life following Moishe Maisel's heart attack over Mei's pregnancy news. Caroline Aaron, who plays Joel's mother, shared some details as to how her character might receive the news in season 5.

"I think that ultimately the best part of Shirley is that she just wants her children to be happy," Aaron told Express last September. "I think she will work very hard to get Mei to convert and certainly to raise this child Jewish, and that will be very important to her."

Aaron also thinks Shirley will try to convert Mei to Judaism, even though she's not sure Mei would commit. “That probably won’t be her decision, but she’s going to try and make it her decision if she has her way."

Rachel Brosnahan has been working hard on her character development.

Rachel takes her iconic role as Midge Maisel very seriously. The actress recently opened up to Women's Health about how she works on her character.

"I studied a lot of women because the world of comedy was so foreign to me. I really didn't know anything about it," Rachel said. "I was convinced for a short period that Midge was based on a lesser-known comedian named Jean Carroll, who was so talented. I hesitate to even say this, but if you watch the very few videos of Jean Carroll that are available on YouTube, I borrowed everything she does with her hands and arms from the first season."

Has The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel been renewed for season 6?

Nope! Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but season 5 will be the final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. It also isn't likely to see a reboot or spinoff in the near future.

"We want to make sure that when we go out, we go out with a bang. I think it’s too early to think about anything—I don’t know about a reboot, I don’t know why we would do that, but I don’t know," said Sherman-Palladino to The Hollywood Reporter.

Brosnahan, for her part, said that the hardest part about the ending is leaving her character. "They become a part of you. You become a part of them in ways that you can't articulate," she told People.
