Midway through the first period with the Canadiens pressing in front of Jones’ net, Paul Byron whipped a feed to Galchenyuk. Jones moved to his left and put himself in position to make the save on the former 30-goal scorer.

Jones has been one of the best recent acquisitions for the Sharks. San Jose traded for Jones from the Boston Bruins – who earlier in the offseason picked up Jones from the Los Angeles Kings – in the summer of 2015 and last season he led the Sharks to their first Stanley Cup Final.

So far this year, Jones holds a 13-8-1 record with a 1.99 goal-against average and .924 save percentage.s Jones is 8-2-1 in his last 11 starts, with a 1.46 goal-against average and a .945 save percentage. Against the Canadiens he stopped 31 of 32 shots on goal in a 2-1 victory.

“I think he’s just never had that chance,” Sharks forward Joel Ward said about Jones after a 4-1 Wednesday win over theKIngs. “He was backing up to (Jonathan) Quick (in Los Angeles) I’m sure if he had that opportunity to play I’m sure he could have done the job too so it was just the matter he was behind another good goalie so he needed his coming out party.”
