Watch live: Nats and Orioles clash in Free MLB Game of the Day

Any sports fan who went to the library as a kid is familiar with the works of author Matt Christopher. Over his career, Christopher published over 100 novels, a large amount of which were about sports. If you’re familiar with his works, you can picture some of the artwork and titles of his books right now.

One of Christopher’s most famous baseball-related books is “The Kid Who Only Hit Homers.” We’re guessing that novel wasn’t based on a true story, but Baltimore Orioles slugger Mark Trumbo has us reconsidering that notion.

Over his last 11 games, Trumbo has turned into the real-life “Kid Who Only Hit Homers.” During that span, Trumbo has notched seven hits … all of which have left the yard!

Whether Trumbo can continue that streak will be the focus of Yahoo Sports’ MLB Free Game of the Day on Tuesday. Trumbo and the Orioles will look to show of their power against rookie Reynaldo Lopez and the Washington Nationals. The contest, which starts at 7:05 p.m. ET, can be streamed on the Yahoo Sports app, Yahoo’s Sports Home, MLB index, video home and this very post. Local blackouts apply, per MLB rules.

While Trumbo’s streak is impressive, he still has a ways to go in order to tie the major-league record. Mark McGwire currently holds that milestone, hitting a home run in 11 straight at-bats as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2001.

That seems unlikely, but given Trumbo’s power output this season, it’s tough to doubt him. Through 518 plate appearances, the slugger has mashed a league-leading 38 home runs. Trumbo has always been a elite power hitter, but working with hitting coach Edgar Martinez in Seattle last season seemed to unlock some extra potential in his bat.

Trumbo has already set a career-high for home runs this season with a little over a month to go. On top of that, he returned to the All-Star Game for the first time in four years and put on a strong showing in the Home Run Derby. His 122 wRC+, an advanced stat that measures a player’s offensive contributions, is just a shade under his career-high of 124, which he set back in 2012.

Now that Trumbo has turned into a fictional character come to life, we have to wonder what other Christopher novels he’s currently living out. “The Lucky Baseball Bat” seems like a given at the moment. And if things go right for Baltimore, it’s possible he’ll be involved in a “Miracle at the Plate” in October.

Oh, and if Trumbo suddenly goes cold over the next few weeks, well … Christopher wrote “Return of the Home Run Kid” for a reason.
