Mark Dantonio: Michigan State players to determine if Jon Reschke could rejoin
If members of Michigan State’s football team are willing to let him come back, former Spartan linebacker Jon Reschke could rejoin the team.
Reschke announced he was transferring after the 2016 season following an incident where he admittedly said an insensitive remark to a teammate. Reschke never transferred anywhere and coach Mark Dantonio said Wednesday that Reschke could return if the team was comfortable with the idea.
“I’ve talked to our football team about it,” Dantonio said. “That’s our football team’s decision on that one. I think there’s certain things that you go through relative to your football team so that decision will get made as we go forward. I think it’s more important to talk to our players about that, if and when that happens.”
There’s another factor at play here too. Reschke said he was going to graduate and transfer to his new school as a graduate transfer. He didn’t play in 2017 after having a knee injury in the spring. If he was to attempt to play football in 2018 for the Spartans he would need an NCAA waiver for a sixth year of eligibility. While the NCAA waiver process can be inconsistent at times, we can’t say we’re too confident Reschke would get that waiver given the circumstances of his initial departure from the team.
Reschke wrote in February of 2017 that he had decided to seek the transfer after discussions with the coaching staff.
“In an argument and a brief moment of anger I lost control of my emotions and made an insensitive and totally regrettable comment involving a former teammate,” he wrote then. “In so doing, I have hurt and offended countless number of people and for that I am deeply sorry. If I could take my comment back, I would do so in a second.”
Reschke has 101 tackles throughout his Michigan State career and played in just two games in 2016 because of injuries.
