Mario Cristobal’s nephew Luis, a Georgia State offensive lineman, transferring to Miami

The Miami Hurricanes family is growing again — this time with a player who was part of the family all along.

Head coach Mario Cristobal’s nephew Luis “Lou” Cristobal is heading to the U from Georgia State as a graduate transfer.

And, naturally, like his uncle and father, Luis Jr. is an offensive lineman and graduate of Columbus High. Both Mario and his brother, Luis Sr. — Luis’ father — are former Hurricanes national champions.

Lou Cristobal’s Twitter bio on Sunday has him as an “OL @canesfootball/Proud Columbus Alumni.’’

“I would like to thank the entire Georgia State Panthers Football staff for the opportunity to play the game at the highest level,” Cristobal posted April 14 on Twitter. “I thoroughly enjoyed playing for coaches Shawn Elliot, John Holt, Thomas Austin, Mike Sirignano and John Sisk, and I am proud to have represented GSU the way that I did.

“Today, I am excited to say that I am entering the NCAA Transfer Portal as a graduate transfer, with two years of eligibility remaining! Thank you, GSU, for everything! #Light it Blue!”

Since he announced he was entering the portal, Cristobal, a guard/center, has posted on Twitter that he has been offered scholarships by several programs, including Western Kentucky, Western Michigan, Jacksonville State, Troy, Central Michigan and Utah State among others.

Luis was a two-time Columbus All-State selection in Class 8A, including first-team honors as a senior. He led Columbus to a 14-1 record and berth in the state title game in 2018, when they fell to Jacksonville Mandarin. He was a three-star prospect in the 247Sports composite rankings when he graduated from Columbus.

At Georgia State, Cristobal was a member of the 2019 recruiting class. The GSU athletics site said he “saw action in the final 10 games of 2021” and “played in three games in 2020,’’ and two games in his 2019 redshirt year.

Lou’s dad, a longtime Miami-Dade Police sergeant who officially retired Oct. 31, told the Miami Herald before the season that he was “really fired up’’ to have Mario return as head coach. The dad tweeted after his son announced his intentions to transfer: “So PROUD of our son! An absolute throwback. Tough, disciplined, hard working, and unbreakable. We are very happy for you, Lou!#WarriorDNA #NoCreoEnNadie
