Marcus Stroman gets through spring debut on cruise control

With a strict pitch limit and an opposing lineup full of teenagers, no one expected Marcus Stroman’s spring debut to be particularly eventful.

The fact that it wasn’t shouldn’t surprise anyone, but is certainly good news for the Toronto Blue Jays. After dealing with a wonky – but not structurally damaged – shoulder throughout the spring, Stroman breezed through two innings of work against the Canadian Junior National Team with two strikeouts, a walk, and no hits allowed on 27 pitches.

Outside of his walk to Noah Naylor, he looked pretty sharp throughout and seemed to get stronger as his outing went on. His fastball reportedly sat 91-92, which is a little low by his standards, but far from worrying for a first outing.

He also showed off some pretty impressive secondary offerings, particularly later in his outing. Against left fielder Blake Buckle, he snapped off a particularly GIF-able changeup that totally outmatched the youngster.

The final batter he faced, right fielder Dasan Brown, was utterly baffled by his repertoire. He put Brown in a hole on a slider he had no chance on.

Then he froze him on a front-door curveball. Check and mate.

Now, should we be impressed that Stroman was able to mow down some high schoolers? Not really. That said, there’s no denying that the right-hander didn’t look nearly as rusty as he might have.

When it comes to this kind of outing, it’s much more important that nothing goes wrong than anything goes right. It’s pretty safe to say nothing went wrong here, so Stroman’s debut on Saturday goes down as an unmitigated success.
