Travis Dermott's time with the Toronto Maple Leafs has come to an end.

On the eve of the NHL's trade deadline, the Maple Leafs sent the depth defenceman to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a third-round pick, both teams announced on Sunday.

Though it seems the Leafs are in no position to trade from their blue line, the deal helps them achieve two things. First, Dermott's outgoing $1.5 million salary will help carve out the necessary salary to complete the reported trade for Seattle Kraken captain Mark Giordano. In addition, the third-round draft selection acquired in return will either be used as currency in their deadline dealings or to replace a different pick being used to help bolster the current roster.

It's been reported that Dermott requested a move out of Toronto after failing to carve out a meaningful role in parts of eight seasons with the organization. The former second-round selection has been passed by Rasmus Sandin and Timothy Liljegren on the depth chart, and has been relegated to a part-time role behind the likes of Ilya Lyubushkin and Justin Holl.

Dermott scored 12 goals and accumulated 52 points in 251 games in the blue and white, and also appeared in 22 postseason games.

It's expected that Toronto's move for Giordano and forward Colin Blackwell will be completed following the 5 p.m. ET count on the salary cap.
