Maple Leafs' Andreas Johnsson requires surgery, out 8 weeks

The injury news keeps coming for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Head coach Sheldon Keefe announced to the media on Friday that forward Andreas Johnsson will require surgery on his injured knee and is expected to miss at least eight weeks.

Johnsson exited Thursday night’s game against the Dallas Stars in the first period after colliding with teammate Kasperi Kapanen, and Keefe said post game that the injury would not be in the short-term.

It has been a trying season for Johnsson injury-wise. He already missed more than a month of the season with a leg injury, and has suffered three separate leg-related injuries this season alone.

The eight-week time frame matches up directly with the end of the regular season, meaning the Maple Leafs will have to make their push to the playoffs with one less top-six forward on their depth chart.

Johnsson joins forward Ilya Mikheyev, and defencemen Morgan Rielly and Cody Ceci as active members of the team’s Long Term Injured Reseve.

The Maple Leafs have some time to figure out if they want to make a corresponding move to fill Johnsson’s spot in the meantime.

The NHL trade deadline is February 24th.
