Substitute Jadon Sancho’s first goal since September earned Manchester United a thrilling 2-2 draw with Leeds United in the Premier League on Wednesday as the hosts came back from two goals down to salvage a point.

Leeds flew out of the traps and stunned Old Trafford into silence after 55 seconds when Wilfried Gnonto arrowed the visitors in front from the edge of the penalty area.

The home side wasted a host of chances to level in the first half, before Leeds looked to have stormed into a match-winning position early in the second period as Raphael Varane put through his own net to double the visitors’ advantage.

However, in-form Marcus Rashford headed the hosts back into the match in the 62nd minute and Sancho stepped off the bench to rescue his side a point eight minutes later, squeezing the ball past goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Old Trafford sensed another rousing comeback would be completed with a late winner, but their side ran out of steam, failing to win at home for the first time in 14 matches in all competitions.

United stayed third in the standings, three points ahead of Newcastle United in fourth, having played one game more.

Managerless Leeds climbed one place to 16th, one point clear of the relegation zone.

United had beaten their Roses rivals Leeds by a scoreline of 11-3 in their previous two clashes at Old Trafford, and the visitors were on a seven-game Premier League winless streak which led to manager Jesse Marsch being sacked this week.

Their form made it all the more surprising when Leeds raced into an early lead, Gnonto netting the second-earliest goal scored by an away player at Old Trafford in the Premier League, after Edin Dzeko’s strike in 2014 for Manchester City.

After De Gea denied Leeds a second with a smart stop at his near post, United twice went close to levelling as debutant Marcel Sabitzer volleyed over before Garnacho drilled just wide.

The chances kept coming for the home side, with Garnacho rounding Meslier before seeing an effort blocked and Sabitzer denied by a brilliant save.

The hosts’ profligacy looked to have proved costly as Leeds appeared to be on course to secure a first win in 18 trips to Old Trafford after Varane was powerless to prevent Crysencio Summerville’s cross rolling into his own net.

Rashford, however, had another ideas, steering a header home to become the first Manchester United player to score in six consecutive appearances at Old Trafford in the Premier League since Wayne Rooney in 2012.

Brenden Aaronson hit the post from a Leeds free kick, a let- off Manchester United capitalised on as Sancho, back in the squad after a lengthy absence due to physical and mental wellbeing issues, grabbed the equaliser with a calm finish.

QSI is understood to be working alongside a consortium of international investors looking to buy a significant stake in an English club, with United one of those under consideration.

The organisation is a subsidiary of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), the country’s sovereign wealth fund, which has assets worth an estimated 450 billion US dollars (more than £372bn).

Sources aware of the discussions say a full takeover of United by anyone connected to Qatar is out of the question.

Fans will be disappointed to learn that today’s game between Manchester United versus Leeds is not on UK TV.

The contest is one of the fiercest rivalries on these shores but the Yorkshire club’s 19-year absence from the top flight meant that meetings were few and far between.

This week, however, sees the clubs clash twice within a matter of days.

Still, tonight’s game at Old Trafford will not be available to watch on TV in the UK, though the reverse fixture at Elland Road this Sunday will be broadcast across the Sky Sports platform.

It is of course a rarity to see United games – particularly one of this magnitude – not shown live to football fans in the UK.

The original date for the game was scheduled for 3pm GMT on Sunday September 17 2022, making it in ineligible for broadcast due to the blackout imposed across English football at the time.

It was then postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September, meaning a new date had to be arranged. The fact it was not originally due to be broadcast means it cannot be on Wednesday.

Man United takeover latest: Qatari investors ‘set to bid' for club

Qatari investors are planning to make a huge bid to buy Premier League club Manchester United, the Daily Mail newspaper reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.

The report described the investors as "a group of private, high-wealth individuals" from Qatar, which hosted the 2022 World Cup.

United declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.

New York-listed shares of Manchester United jumped nearly 13% in premarket trading.

Jim Ratcliffe’s company INEOS formally entered the bidding process to buy United last month after the club’s U.S. owners, the Glazer family, said in November they had begun looking at options including new investment or a potential sale.

Bloomberg News reported last month that Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), which owns Paris St Germain, was considering either a total takeover or a stake in Manchester United or their rivals Liverpool.

United fans have been clamouring for a change of ownership and the Glazers have been the target of intense criticism as the team last won silverware back in 2017, lifting the Europa League and League Cup trophies.

In April, thousands protested outside Old Trafford, lighting flares and singing songs demanding the Glazers "get out of the club".

United’s net debt, another bone of contention among fans, had grown to 515 million pounds ($620.42 million) by September.

The team, managed by Erik ten Hag, are third in the league on 42 points after 21 games, three points behind Manchester City but eight adrift of leaders Arsenal, who have played a game less.

Mauricio Pochettino has been named the bookmakers’ second favourite for the vacant Leeds manager job after Jesse Marsch was sacked.

Out of work since leaving Paris Saint-Germain last year, the former Tottenham boss is still considered some way behind early frontrunner Carlos Corberan.

It is the ex-Leeds Under-23 manager who is leading the way despite only taking over at Championship club West Brom just over three months ago.

Another Elland Road old boy, Marcelo Bielsa, is sat third in the bookies’ estimates having recently turned down the Everton job.

Rio Ferdinand believes Jadon Sancho can be “like a new signing” for Manchester United and give the squad a lift heading into a crucial few weeks of the season.

Sancho made his first appearance since October when he came off the bench a week ago against Nottingham Forest as United booked their place in the Carabao Cup final.

At the start of the year, Erik ten Hag said Sancho was not physically or mentally ready to be a part of the first-team squad, having spent the World Cup on an individual training camp in the Netherlands.

The updates have been more positive in recent weeks though and Sancho has now joined up again with his team-mates, making his return to competitive action.

United face Barcelona across two legs in the Europa League play-off round before a Wembley clash against Newcastle at the end of the month, and Ferdinand is confident Sancho will have a part to play.

“Jadon Sancho is back in the squad and if he can get back playing to his best it will be like a new signing for the club,” Ferdinand told William Hill.

“If you get someone like him, with the talent he has, playing to his best, he’s a threat for any team – his ability to cause defenders problems.

“In the short-term it also makes United a lot more competitive in general. The United bench over the last month hasn’t been at its most strongest so having Sancho back gives Erik ten Hag a new option to turn to in the coming weeks.

“He didn’t come on against Crystal Palace on Saturday, but the manager will be turning to him in the coming weeks so he’ll have the opportunities to build up some form.”
