Just minutes before that decisive spot-kick, former Chelsea midfielder Bertrand Traore had struck for Villa to cancel out Anthony Martial’s smart header five minutes before the interval.

United must now be considered as genuine title contenders after a third straight home win extended their impressive unbeaten run to 10 matches.

Villa, meanwhile, drop to sixth behind Chelsea after a first loss since November 30.
