Manchester City want to dominate English football and can under Pep Guardiola, says Kyle Walker

Manchester City want to dominate English football for years to come, according to Kyle Walker, who believes Pep Guardiola can build a dynasty at the Etihad.

City broke every conceivable Premier League record on the way to last year’s title, finishing the campaign with 100 points to their name.

Though Guardiola does not expect to surpass multiple records again, he does expect City to mount a serious defence of their crown.

Last April, after City were confirmed as champions, the Catalan promised to be ‘tougher’ on his squad this season in pursuit of a second title.

Walker claims Guardiola has done exactly that, and he believes it is necessary in order for City to become the first side to win back-to-back Premier League titles since 2009.

“There’s been a big change,” he said, when asked whether Guardiola was living up to his promise of showing more tough love.

“Obviously he’s not settling for one title and we’re not as well - we want more. I don’t want to sound big-headed but we want to dominate English football.

“I think we’ve got the players here, and we’ve definitely got the manager, to do that. So we need to keep listening.

The 28-year-old added: “Every day is a learning day and you can always adjust to different tactics, adjust to different formations and that’s something we need to take on collectively as a group - that’s manager and players - to make sure that we can dominate the English game.

Walker arrived at City from Tottenham Hotspur a year ago without senior honours to his name. Now, with a league title and EFL Cup triumph under his belt, he wants more.

“I’ve not just signed here to pick up my first Premier League title and then say, okay, I’ll rest on that. I’m hungry for a lot more,” he added.

City were widely named as pre-season title favourites, though Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have been tipped to mount a challenge after a summer of heavy spending at Anfield.

Walker believes that any one of the chasing pack could challenge City this season, given the sometimes-unpredictable nature of the Premier League.

“There’s a lot of challengers, there are a lot of good teams in the Premier League,” he said. “Even, you look at Everton now, who have spent a lot of money in the transfer window, they’re going to be tough competitors.

“We just see the Premier League is full of surprises. Leicester did it so why can’t anyone else do it? We’ll just have to see.”
