A man was killed in a shooting Monday afternoon just south of McLane High School in Fresno, police said.

The shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. in the 4200 block of East Union Avenue in a neighborhood that’s also next to Sacred Heart Catholic Church near Cedar and Clinton avenues.

Police Chief Paco Balderrama in an update at the homicide scene said the victim was in his mid-20s. He appeared to have gotten into an argument when a suspect opened fired and shot the man in the head.

A deputy with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office was a couple blocks away when the shots were reported and arrived to provide aid.

The man, however, was pronounced dead at the scene.

No suspect description was given, but Balderrama said “we have a lot of leads” and that detectives were “developing information including surveillance video.”

A woman broke through the crime scene and yelled “my baby.” She had to be restrained. The chief said the woman appeared to be a family member or a girlfriend.

Initially, police said the victim was a juvenile, which prompted Balderrama to change his afternoon schedule, fearing that a student had been shot since the scene was close to the McLane parking lot and school had just been dismissed.

Less than two weeks ago, police dealt with a potential deadly incident near another Fresno high school when a driver hit 11 students who were waiting at a bus stop across from Roosevelt High on Sept. 7. None of the injuries turned out to be major, police have said.

“Obviously still a very tragic situation,” Balderrama said Friday. “Some of the first responders here were some of our school resource officers just to make sure that none of the kids were involved.

“It’s important that we protect our kids; it’s important that we protect everybody,” he said.

“A life was gunned down.”

Balderrama said it was the 27th homicide in Fresno this year.
