Man sentenced to year in prison for stealing Olympic ring

A 23-year-old man who stole an Olympic championship ring has been sentenced to one year in jail.

Brad Jacobs was the skip of the Canadian men’s curling team that won gold at the Sochi Winter Olympics earlier this year. He had reported his ring, wallet, cellphone, watch and bracelet were stolen from a motel room while he was in Boyle, Alta., north of Edmonton on June 20 and 21.

RCMP had asked for the public’s help in locating the ring and after receiving a number of tips and reviewing surveillance tapes, police identified two suspects.

The man pleaded guilty to two counts of break and enter. He was sentenced to one year in prison and ordered to pay $200 victim surcharge for his involvement in the ring theft.

Jacobs will be reunited with his Olympic ring shortly, say RCMP.

“Our ultimate goal was to recover the stolen property and see it returned to the victims,” said RCMP Const. Alex Ayres in a news release. “We are pleased to see this investigation come to a conclusion with a successful prosecution in court.”

A female charged in the same investigation is set to make her first court appearance on Aug. 26.
