The University of Maine announced Tuesday that 18-year-old student-athlete Darius Minor collapsed and died during preseason football workouts.

Minor, a defensive back, was participating in the third week of a freshman workout program, according to the university

Darius Minor collapsed, died on practice field

The school said that Minor collapsed on the field around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, and efforts to resuscitate him by school staff and first responders were unsuccessful.

“The athletics department, our student-athletes and the entire campus mourn the loss of this bright and promising member of our community,” Maine president Joan Ferrini-Mundy said in a statement. “We ask all to keep him, his family and his friends in your thoughts through this painful time.”

The death occurred while head coach Joe Harasymiak was in Baltimore for CAA media day, The Portland Press Herald reports.

“Words cannot express the grief we have following this tragic loss,”Harasymiak said via school release. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Darius’ family and friends during this terrible time.”

Minor was a 2017 All-Central Virginia first-team wide receiver and second-team defensive back at Orange County High School in Orange, Virginia, according to the university.

Temperatures reportedly in the low 80s for workout

The Bangor Daily News reports that temperatures were in the low 80s with high humidity during Tuesday’s workout that preceded the official start of training camp next week.

It’s the second workout-related death of an NCAA football player this offseason after Maryland offensive lineman Jordan McNair died in June of heat stroke suffered during a workout.

Athletic director Damon Evans said that McNair had difficulty recovering from a May 29 conditioning test and was hospitalized for two weeks before his June 13 death at 19 years old.
