You don’t see this every day.

As Friday night’s BYU vs. Toledo game in Provo, Utah, lingered on in the fourth quarter, ESPN commentator Mack Brown made a strange announcement. Brown, the longtime Texas head coach, apparently had a plane to catch back to ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut, so he left in the middle of the game!

For real!

There was still more than 10 minutes left in regulation, so play-by-play man Adam Amin called the rest of the game solo with help from Molly McGrath on the sideline.

It was bizarre, but I’m assuming there aren’t many flights from Utah (Amin mentioned Brown had to catch a car to Salt Lake City airport, which is 45 minutes from Provo, where BYU is located) back to Bristol. That leaves one to wonder why ESPN assigned Brown to the game in the first place if he had in-studio duties to attend to back East on Saturday.

Brown missed a wild finish, too. Toledo led 45-42 when he left and BYU was able to come back and win 55-53 on a last-second field goal.

Toledo put up 692 yards of offense (QB Logan Woodside had 505 yards and five touchdowns but threw a crucial late interception) in the loss while BYU running back Jamaal Williams had a huge night with a school-record 286 yards and five rushing touchdowns.

Toledo pulled ahead 53-52 with 1:11 to go when it somehow converted a two-point conversion even after Woodside was not ready for the snap.

The ball hit Woodside in the gut and fell to the turf, but he somehow regrouped and found Michael Roberts in the end zone to give the Rockets a one-point lead.

The lead was not enough. BYU (with help from a bad facemask call) marched right down the field and won as time expired via a 19-yard field goal from Rhett Almond (yes, that’s his name).

BYU improved to 2-3 with the win while Toledo dropped to 3-1.
