LSU hit with $100,000 fine for fans storming field after upset of Georgia

For the second time this season, the SEC has fined one of its members for violating the conference’s “access to competition area policy.”

That’s a fancy way of saying the league doesn’t like when fans storm the field after a big win, which happened at Tiger Stadium after No. 13 LSU beat up No. 2 Georgia, 36-16. As a result, LSU was fined $100,000 by the SEC.

It’s the second violation of this particular policy for LSU. Previously the school was fined after the win over Ole Miss in 2014.

“While Saturday’s win was a moment for the LSU family to remember, on-field celebrations can be unsafe,” LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva said in a statement. “We share the conference’s concerns for the safety of fans and the security of players and staff.”

Last month, Kentucky was hit with the same $100,000 fine a few days after its big win over Mississippi State.

The financial penalty for violating the policy saw a big increase in 2015 up from $5,000 for a first offense and $25,000 for a second offense to $50,000 for a first offense and $100,000 for a second offense. A third offense would incur a $250,000 penalty. Just ask Auburn.

“Access to competition areas shall be limited to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel and properly-credentialed individuals at all times,” the rule says. “For the safety of participants and spectators alike, at no time before, during or after a contest shall spectators be permitted to enter the competition area. It is the responsibility of each member institution to implement procedures to ensure compliance with this policy.”
