As indicated by his father earlier in the year, Louisville linebacker Trevon Young will not play in 2016.

Friday at ACC Media Days, Cardinals head coach Bobby Petrino confirmed that the hip injury Young suffered in the Music City Bowl will keep him out for the year. Young, who fractured and dislocated his hip in the first quarter of Louisville’s win over Texas A&M on Dec. 30, will use a redshirt year and aim to return in 2017, Petrino said.

“We’re going to miss Trevon,” Petrino said per The Courier-Journal. “He’s a very, very good player, particularly on third down. He put a lot of pressure (on quarterbacks), made some big plays to help us win games. He was really stressing out about this deal (of trying to play in 2016), and he just got to a point where he didn’t get better for a while. So I think it’s been a relief to him to know (he’ll redshirt). … His mother tells me that it’s really helped relieve some anxiety that he was going through.”

Miles Young, Trevon’s father, said in February that Trevon’s rehabilitation would take 8-12 months after his Dec. 31 surgery. Petrino indicated that Young had a setback that required a scope of the hip. Following that procedure, Petrino said, doctors gave Young a “positive outlook” to return to the field in the future.

As a junior in 2015, Young had 32 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. His sack total was second on the team and seventh in the ACC. Teammate Devonte Fields had 22 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks, creating a feared pass-rushing duo for the Cardinals.

With Young sidelined, Petrino pointed to junior James Hearns and redshirt freshman Jonathan Greenard to fill the void at outside linebacker opposite Fields.

Coming off an 8-5 record in 2015, the Cardinals open up their 2016 schedule at home against Charlotte on Sept. 1.
