Loui Eriksson doesn't "get on 100 percent" with Canucks coach

It would not be unfair to say that Loui Eriksson’s time with the Vancouver Canucks has been wildly unsuccessful.

Since signing a six-year, $36-million contract in 2016, Eriksson has scored 32 goals in 196 games with the team. For reference, the year before signing the deal he scored 30 goals for the Boston Bruins.

According to an interview with Swedish hockey site HockeySverige, he’s reportedly not happy with how his time with the Canucks has played out, and definitely not happy with how he has been used.

“The coach and I don’t really get on 100 per cent,” Eriksson said, according to translations from Patrick Johnston at The Province. “It is difficult when I do not get the same trust that I received from all the other coaches I had during my career. Of course it is tough on that front.”

Travis Green is the coach in question in this situation, having taken the reigns from Willie Desjardins at the start of the 2017-18 season.

“I haven’t had so much ice time,” Eriksson said, which is a claim that isn’t without its truth.

He played roughly 19 minutes per game in his last two successful seasons with the Bruins, and after playing roughly the same amount in his first season under Desjardins, Eriksson has seen his average time on ice drop to 16:16 in 2017-18, and 14:04 last year.

Eriksson stated that he feels like “I’m still a good player in the league,” which may be debatable at this point. The NHL is increasingly becoming a young man’s league, and Eriksson will be 34 by the time next season starts.

He’s still got three years left on his deal with the Canucks, so he and Green have plenty of time to hash out the issues between them.
