Details have finally emerged about Daedalic Entertainment’s Lord of the Rings: Gollum.

When Lord of the Rings: Gollum was announced in March 2019, details were sparse. Many fans speculated that the game would be a point-and-click adventure which is the genre that Daedalic thrives in. The developer has almost exclusively produced adventure games since its founding in 2007.

But Daedalic has revealed that LotR: Gollum will be a stealth action game comparable to Prince of Persia, according to an article from IGN.

Yeah, we didn’t see this coming, either.

But after some explanation from lead designer Kevin Wilkes, it doesn’t seem like much of a stretch. The Prince of Persia analogy was made to describe the platforming elements of LotR: Gollum but there won’t be any swashbuckling combat or ninja takedowns.

“It is mostly a non-combat game, but Gollum will be able to stealthily take out enemies.” Wilkes told IGN. “However, this will not be easy and always come with big risks. We want players to carefully weigh these encounters. After all, Gollum’s strengths lie in cunning not combat.”

The game will also be heavily narrative-driven which Daedalic’s fans will be happy to hear. Gollum is a dualistic character at war with himself and players will choose whether he will adopt the gentler persona of Sméagol or the vicious persona of Gollum.

Daedalic will also be flexing some creative license. LotR: Gollum will be a different perspective on a familiar story. It begins in tandem with “The Fellowship of the Ring” but from Gollum’s perspective, who wanders into Mordor seeking Bilbo Baggins and his precious ring only to be caught by Sauron’s servants.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is scheduled to release in 2021.
