Logan Couture will find himself in Toronto next month after he was named to Canada’s World Cup of Hockey roster replacing Jamie Benn.

“We are excited to add Logan to Team Canada. He has developed into a top player in the NHL, and his versatility will benefit our group of forwards. In making this decision the management group consulted with our coaching staff and determined that Logan was the best fit to help fill the role that Jamie was projected to play on Team Canada,” said Team Canada GM Doug Armstrong.

“We want to thank Jamie for his dedication to an extensive rehab program in an attempt to play for Canada. Unfortunately, Jamie will not be available and we wish him a speedy recovery.”

Benn underwent core muscle surgery last month and at the time Stars GM Jim Nill said that his availability for the tournament “will be determined.” Despite his absence from Canada’s roster, Nill told Mark Stepneski that the captain will be ready in time for the start of Dallas’ season on Oct. 13.

Couture had a solid regular season for the San Jose Sharks putting up 15 goals and 36 points despite missing 30 games. But he really turned it on in the postseason en route to reaching the Stanley Cup Final. The forward finished as the team’s leading scorer with 10 goals and 30 points in 24 games.
